Hello friends and fellow foodies!
In the past few days I have been sharing some typical and traditional Dominican desserts like redcurrant dessert and Cashew dessert. Today I bring another very typical Dominican dessert: Orange peel dessert!
Dominican traditional desserts are generally fruit based, which is why they’re intense, clean and well defined in flavor as well as just unforgettable!
It is very similar to the redcurrant dessert and Cashew dessert in terms of preparation, but just slightly more complex, as it requires more work.
Enjoy this little part of the Dominican heart!
Ingredients
- Orange peel
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 stick of cinnamon
- A bit of vanilla (about 1 tsp.)
- Water
Directions
Peel the oranges being careful to only remove the green or orange part of the skin. Boil the peels (be careful not to let them get too tender)
Once boiled, throw away that water and put them in fresh water. Squeeze them a bit, wash and throw away that water. Repeat that step until the bitterness is gone. It also helps to remove the veins from the peel. Set apart.
In a pot add the sugar and cinnamon and just enough water to “wet them”, as it becomes a syrup, add the peels and let them simmer until it’s all well mixed and the peels have absorbed well the flavors of the syrup. Add a bit of vanilla and turn off.
Allow to cool at room temperature.
Enjoy this very Dominican dessert and continue enjoying here, the home of Dominican cookery classics.

Arturo, this dessert looks so fantastic! I love that it uses a piece of the orange that is usually discarded. I’m saving my orange peels to try out this recipe!
Ha ha! Thanks! Make sure you squeeze out the bitterness well, that’s the most important detail! Thanks for your comments!
